Darian Turner

Fables and folklore for grown readers

Darian Turner writes stories of small creatures and stubborn women, and of the harms done to them, told with a kindness that refuses to make a spectacle of their suffering. She was first published as a poet at twelve. She lives in the Pacific Northwest.

Novels

Potatoskr

A dark fable of the world tree

There live the stories of how the first humans were trees; and how one tree bound all the cosmos together; and how one squirrel was also a potato, and lived as a humble gardener amidst the roots of that tree.

History books say the potato reached the Old World in the sixteenth century. They are perfectly wrong. Beneath Yggdrasil, a gardener the world forgot tends a harvest whose cost no one sees, until a giantess, a pair of birds, and one very irksome squirrel begin to look.
